2. The Exhilarating Nehru Trophy Boat Race
A spectacular extravaganza of music, songs and snake boats, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is quite popular amid photography enthusiasts also. Every year, come August (second Saturday) and thousands of spectators including locals and tourists flock the banks of Punnamada Lake. Named after the first PM of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, this boat race is an eagerly awaited event. It is an important part of the state’s history.
The preparations for race start one month in advance. Snake boat or Chundan Vallam, adorned with silk parasols and flags, traverses through the lake waters accompanied by high-spirited religious and mythological songs (Vanchipattu) and drum beats. During the race, each boat has 95 oarsmen, 5 controllers or amarakkar, 10 cheerleaders or nilakkar, and 10 singers. Along with snake boats, other boats that take part in this boat race are Churulan, Iruttukuthy, and Vaipu.

3. Memorable sunset at the pristine Alleppey beach
Ideal for serenity seekers, nature lovers and photography enthusiasts, Alleppey beach offers you an absolutely relaxing environment. Around 2 km westwards of the main city, this beach has a left-alone lighthouse that offers stunning views of the surroundings from the top. 6. The magnificent Krishnapuram Palace
A wonderful example of Kerala style of architecture, the Krishnapuram Palace was erected by one of the Kayakulam rulers but was later renovated in the 18th century by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the then ruler of Travancore. One of the most popular attractions around Alleppey, it also spreads in an area of 1.5 acres. This double-storyed structure originally had 22 rooms. The palace complex also has a pond. Dormer windows, narrow corridors, gabled roof low ceiling, patios, balcony windows and meandering staircases are the highlights.
Krishnapuram Palace also has an archeological museum whose walls are with Gajendramoksham mural painting, the largest mural in Kerala. The mural spreads 49 square meters and depicts an elephant seeking salvation (moksha) by saluting Lord Vishnu as the other gods and goddess look at them. The painting is known to have a historical and religious connection with the Travancore rulers. Other possessions here are Kayamkulam Vaal, a double-edged sword, 4 Buddha statues, antiques, historical artifacts and a bible in Sansktri language.
