Originally constructed in the year 1503, St Francis Church Kochi is famed as India’s oldest church that was built by the Europeans. The church boasts of a serene ambiance and a wonderful architecture. Initially made -up of wood and mud, the church is also the burial spot of Vasco da Gama, the well-known Portuguese explorer. When he came to Kerala for the 3rd time in 1524, he fell ill and died in Cochin. He is buried here and then after 14 years his remains were taken to Lisbon. His gravestone is still kept here. Later in 1516, the church was reconstructed.
Though St Francis Church has a modest structure but it a popular landmark in the city which has been witness to Kochi’s history and is a prime example of church architecture in the country. Regular worship services take place here on all Sundays and on commemorative days. Visitors can visit the church on the week days.
