Attractions in Idukki


Idukki Adventure

Idukki in Kerala make for the perfect adventure holiday destination. Kulamavu , situated at a height of 3,000 ft above the sea level, is one of the famous hill stations of Idukki district in Kerala. Every year, a large number of tourists visit this place for a trekking excursion. While trekking through this magnificent landscape, the travelers can enjoy an aerial view of the enchanting surroundings.  Another major attraction to visit is Kulamavu Dam, which is one of the three dams of Idukki constructed under the Idukki Reservior Project. The travelers can also enjoy a 2 hour cruise between Kulamavu and Cheruthoni dams.

Hill View Park

Hill View Park is a famous tourist attraction offering great views of the Idukki and Cheruthoni Dams. This is a well maintained park that sprawls over a wide area of 8 acres and is closely located at a distance of 1.5 km from the Idukki town. The travelers wishing to observe the majestic sights of the animal sheltering, over here, must not forget to carry their binoculars.

Idukki Arch Dam

The Idukki Arch Dam is a hydroelectric project and makes for a popular attraction in Idduki, encompassing  20 big and small dams, a handful of underground tunnels along with underground power generator. The dam is ideally located between two mountains namely Kurathimala and Kurvanmala and is surrounded by breathtaking surroundings. The best time to visit these dams is somewhere between August to March.  

Kalvari Mount

Kalvari Mount, lying at a distance of 5 km from Idukki, is a popular hill station retreat  for all the visitors. The steep slope winding the Kalvari Mount provides a magnificent view of Kamakshy and Mariyapuram villages on one side and Reservior from Idukki to ayyappancovil on the other side.

Keezharkuthu Falls

Keezharkuthu Falls, also famed as the Rainbo waterfall, makes for one of the must visit tourist attractions. It makes for a splendid sight to see the water rolling down the rocks from a height of about 1500 m. The area surrounding this magnificent waterfall is home to a large number of medicinal plants. For all the people who love adventures, there are a lot of adventure activities to indulge in including mountaineering, rock climbing  and camp trekking etc. These magnificent waterfalls are witnessed throughout the year in the full swing.

Nadukani

Nadukani, located at an altitude of 3000 ft, is a charming hill station in Idukki district. This magnificent hill station is located in close proximity of 25 km from Idukki and is famed to offer a panoramic view of the magnificent blue mountains in the Northern side and Muvattupuzha river on the other side.  Another prime attraction to visit in Nadukani is Moolamttom as it lies on the boundaries of Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary and allows one to have a glimpse of many of the rare species of fauna consisting of wild rabbits, elephants, sambhar, jungle mainah and hornbill.

Thommankuthu Falls

Thommankuthu Fall, situated in the Idukki district of Kerala is a small beautiful fall which is an ideal picnic destination for the visitors. This enchanting waterfall is named after a tribal leader Thomman, who in an accident was washed away in this waterfall while crossing the river.  This picturesque waterfall has seven steps through which the water cascades down at a gushing speed from a height of 1500 m. A major highlight of this waterfall is the formation of a pool at each step. The surroundings are perfect for enjoying adventure activities like rock climbing, trekking, fishing, boating and horse riding.

Thumpachi Calveri Samuchayam

Thumpachi Calveri Samuchayam, situated at a distance of 35 km from Thodupuzha, is famed as an ideal spot for people to relax and meditate. The alluring scenic ambiance is perfect for witnessing amazing sunset views.

Farm Tourism

Idukki is popular among the tourist as a major spice tourism destination and in the historic time, Kerala was highly dependent on its spice trade. Travelers from around the world have traveled to this place in search of spices. If the legends are to be believed, the spice trade of this place is as old as three thousand years. The Idduki spice tourism destination is known for a great production of cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric, mace and in the past, was known as the spice capital of the world.

Monsoon Tourism

Idukki is a famous monsoon tourist destination. The intoxicating smell of the dry earth engulfed in the air is sure to make you feel fresh. After long summer months, the monsoon brings about  a new change. The farmers rejoice these cooling showers that promises to bring prosperity. During this season, the drizzling water from the clouds, is sure to remove the dust from the trees and monument structures, making it look new. In the monsoon season, the lakes and rivers, traversing Idukki, flow freely and cascade down from the mountains.

The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over a wide area of 77sq. km and are about 450-478 m above sea level. On the visit to this sanctuary, the visitors can enjoy the sight of animals like Sambar deer, jungle cat, bisons, wild boar, elephants etc. Among the reptiles, one can enjoy the sight of animals like krait, viper and cobra. This wildlife sanctuary, present in Idukki, is also a great place to visit for the bird watchers as a large variety of bird species reside in this sanctuary, some of the common speciess include woodpeckers, myna, jungle fowl, laughing thrush , peafowl and black bulbul.
