Kasargod Houseboats

Boating on the backwaters of Kasargod is surely an experience of a lifetime. Houseboats (rice boat), which are traditionally known as Kettuvallam now are an extremely popular tourist attraction. These were actually country boats used for transportation of goods from the remote villages to the towns. The transfer of heavy cargo used to become quite easy in this manner. Slowly, they became a redundant means after construction of roads. However, if today a tourist comes to Kasargod, his main attraction are the houseboats of Kasargod to explore the beauty  of the place. Enjoy a ride in these houseboats, also reffered to as Kuvuvalloms, during your vacations to the northernmost district of Kerala.

Kasargod, a famed backwater destination, is also quite famous for its coir process, rice cultivation as well as its varied terrain including the waters of the Arabian sea on the west and the Western Ghats on the east. The unspoilt and untouched beauty is the highllight of Kasargod backwaters offering a memorable experience.

Engineering of a Kasargod houseboat

A houseboat is generally around 67 feet in length and is 13 feet wide in the middle and is made from local eco-friendly materials such as coir carpets, bamboo poles, coconut fiber ropes, and bamboo mats. Artocarpus wood (a type of timbner wood), locally known as Anjili is used for making the body of the boat by cutting into sheets of 5-6 cm of breadth.  The shape of the boat is formed when the ends of these sheets are tied together with coir wires, that stays as it is for years. As  the structure gets finished, modern accessories are added into it to make it a luxury houseboat.

Kasargod Houseboat tourism

From past ferw years, Kasargod backwaters has become a popular destination in tours to Kerala. The backwaters in Kasargod offer you a chance to explore the lush landscape along with beautiful four tiny islands, enclosed by shiny river streams, flowing right into the serene backwaters of Kasargod, a pure treat to the eyes of the tourists. Sometimes also called ‘the land of seven languages and cultures,’ Kasartgod backwaters are still quite away from the touch of the crazy yearly tourism activity in Kerala, which is also the major highlight. Just hire a houseboat,  lie back on the deck, cruise along the waterways, mystic islands, local villages, coconut grooves, spot beautiful birds, the shade of canopies and neighboring lush greenery. Chandragiri and Valiyaparamba are two famous Kasargod Backwater Cruise options along with a few others.
