Kozhikode has made some of the significant contributions in the field of Malayalam language. The famous intellectual debate for Vedic scholars to win the coveted position of Pattathanam takes place at Thali temple during the month of Thulam.
Economy:
Kozhikode is a commercial city of Kerala. The main economy of the people of Kozhikode is business oriented. There are a large number of timber yards present along the banks of Kallayi River. A large number of population is indulged in the work related to agriculture and animal husbandry. The major industries present in and around Kozhikode include fisher and dairy development.

Malabar Mahotsavam:
Malabar Mahotsavam, the primary festival of Kozhikode district, is organized by the Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council in the month of January. This five day festival held from 13 to 17 January. Being in Kozhikode, during this festival, allows one to explore the cultural heritage of the state along with witnessing traditional and folk art, classical music, drama and dance from close quarters during this festivity.
Jalotsavam Festival:
Jalotsavam, a prominent festival of Kozhikode, is also a major part of Onam festival. This festival is considered to be one of the biggest festival of Kerala held during the months of August and September. Three water fiestas are presented in Moorad , Pangilodippara and Korapuzha. During this festival, a lot of water sports are conducted by the various water sports clubs, which make one feel an adrenaline rush in one’s body. Snake boats are another major attraction of this festival.
Malabar Pepper Fest:
Malabar Pepper Fest is an annual event for spice traders. During this fest, the spice coast of Kozhikode is visited by gourmets and gastronomic experts. This unique spice festival is celebrated during the month of October in the Kozhikode.
Kondotti Nercha at Kondotti Mosque:
Kondotti Nercha is a festival celebrated in Kondotti Mosque. The festival draws a large number of visitors from all corners of the world.
Artforms:
Kalaripayattu:
Kalaripayattu, one of the main art form of Kerala, is a form of martial art which is used for self defense and is considered as a cultural legacy of Keralites. The training of Kalaripayattu will incorporate study of Ayurveda and Kalarichikitsa which are majorly used as body healing treatments.
Oppana & Mappila Pattu:
The Muslim community of Kozhikode has its own art form such as singing Mappila Pattu and flok dance called Oppana. The Mappil Pattu songs are composed both in Malayalam and Arabic.
Uru a special ship of Kozhikode:
Kozhikode is famous for manufacturing of a special ship called ‘Uru’ which is built by the creative craftsmen.
