The Bharathappuzha River, also popularly known as Nila, is the second largest river present in Kerala. There are 11 reservoirs set along the course of this river and the Malampuzha dam is among the largest one. This Bharathappuzha River, serves as a lifeline to several towns and villages. A large number of Hindu temples are set around the banks of this pious river like Chamravattam Ayyappa Temple, Thiruvilwamala Sree Rama Temple, Panniyur Sree Varahamurthy and Thirunavaya Navamukunda Temple. On the banks of this river, people can be seen paying homage to their forefathers by performing the “Pithru Tharpanam” ritual of the Karkidaka Vavu day.
