Munnar Culture

The history of Munnar can be traced back to the 10th century. The people of this beautiful hill station are very simple and like to lead a peaceful lifestyle. They believe in their age-old traditions and transfer them to their generations as well. Like other destinations of the southern region of the country, the culture of Munnar is pure Hindu-based culture.  It is still greatly untouched by global modernization.

Following are the main festivals celebrated in Munnar:

Onam: 10-day carnival of Onam is the most important festival celebrated in Kerala. The state bustles with high-spirited activity during the late August or early September. It is also the most famous festival of Munnar as well. The best time to absorb the rich culture of the region, this festival involves feasting, dance, music, boat races, excellent performances and much more.

Thrissur Pooram: Thrissur Pooram is another major festival in Munnar that is celebrated in the month of April or May each year. The Vadakkunnathan Temple in town of Thrissur on the ‘Pooram’ day of the Malayalam Calendar month of ‘Medam’, becomes the venue of this festival. Decked-up elephants and fireworks are the highlight of the procession.
