The most popular wildlife reserve of South India, Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is also referred to as Thekkady. Spread in an area of 925 sq. km., it is one of the 27 tiger reserves in the country. Periyar is home to over 40 mammal species, 160 kinds of butterflies, 54 types of reptiles and 320 avifauna species.
