Thattekad Travel Guide


Located on the northern banks of river Periyar, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary lies within 13 km from Ernakulam district. Situated between an altitude of 35 to 523 meters, it is one of the most well-known bird sanctuaries in the south Indian state Kerala. Also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (name changed in 1983), it is home to over 500 species of rare birds. The area of 25 km of the sanctuary is covered with teak and rosewood cultivation and dense deciduous forest.  Established in 1930, this sanctuary, as per popular ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali belongs is “the wealthiest bird environment in Peninsular India when compared with other eastern Himalayas.”




How To Reach Thattekad


By Air

The nearest airport to Thattekad is in Kochi. Once at the airport, you can hire a taxi to go to  Thattekad Bird Sanctuary.

By Train

The nearest railway station to Thattekad is in Aluva, which is located at a distance of around 48 km. This railhead is well-connected through regular trains to popular towns like Delhi, Madgaon, Mangalore, Korba, Trivandrum, Alapuzzha, Ernakulam and Kanyakumari. The fare of tickets may fall between the range of INR 60-900, depending on the travel class and distance between the destinations.

By Road

To reach Thattekad bird sanctuary, buses are available from Kochi, wherein distance between both the destinations is 60 km. Both semi -deluxe and deluxe buses are available, being managed by the government as well as private companies. However, the nearest town is Kothamangalam from where bus service is available that is around 13 km away.
