Periyar National Park is Kerala’s pristine haven of wilderness. The blessed wildlife sanctuary with huge population of Tigers and Elephants also has a beautiful expanse of water, Periyar Lake. Cruises and boating services are available on the century-old artificially created water body created by Mullaperiyar River. The Periyar Lake harbors within itself a unique aquatic ecosystem. The numerous little islets, the submerged tea trunks are home to various life forms. Periyar Lake cruises are organized by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation and the Forest Department.
The 2-3 hours cruise on the Periyar Lake is incredible. In the safe boats enjoy the amazing sights of the natural scenery and view the species calling Periyar Reserve their home. From the boat, one can easily view the animals who come to the lake shores to quench their thirst. Elephants, deer, gaur, sambhar and reptiles can be easily spotted. Abundant species of water birds are also easily seen. Coming across a ferocious Tiger is a rare treat. The Periyar lake Cruise is one of the best ways to come so close to the wildlife of Periyar.
