The second largest irrigation project in Kerala, Thenmala dam is a popular picnic spot of the state. Constructed across River Kallada, the dam site is a popular shooting location in a number of Tamil and Malayalam movies. The dam is placed quite close to the confluence points of Rivers Kulathupuzha, Chenduruney and Kazhuthurutty. The longest reservoir in the state, it also provides water for power generation in the area.
Enclosed by Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary on both sides and a famed tourist attraction in Thenmala, Thenmala dam reservoir offers opportunities of boat riding. The construction of the dam started in the year 1961 by the Kallada Irrigation and Tree Crop development project. Also called Parappar dam, it is surrounded by lush greenery and is a real treat to the eyes, which is best visited between December and February.
