Best known for Ayurvedic treatments and its globally acclaimed beach resorts, Vizhinjam is a natural port in the Thiruvananthapuram city of Kerala. Proximity to the Kovalam beach has given the village an addition in its tourist population. Walking a couple of kms to the south of Kovalam, one can smell the pungent aroma of fishes filled in the air as Vizhinjam is the busiest fishing harbor. The sight of hundreds of fishing boats on Vizhinjham is an absolute delight and it sets a perfect local connection with the place.
Varied Attractions
Far from the fishing boats, lies the Marine Aquarium which houses a radiant variety of aquatic species. To mesmerize the tourists, the aquarium has Lionfish, Surgeonfish, Squirrelfish, Piranhas, Giant Turtles, Clownfish and Sharks. Apart from the aquatic species, the pearl images in the Marine aquarium have turned out quite eye catching. Prominent Images are of Christ, Virgin Mary and idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses.
Another eye turner on the Vizhinjam village is the 18th century built rock cut temple. The temple boasts of semi carved statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On the other end of the temple, lies the village mosque in orange and white color.
