Varkala is a calm and quiet hamlet by the Arabian Sea on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram district. A wonderful place to relax and rejuvenate on the beach, this is among the most popular holiday spots in Kerala. In addition, it is one of the sacred pilgrimage sites.
The Varkala Beach is renowned for a natural spring. It is believed to have medicinal and curative properties. The shore also is known by the name 'Papanasam Beach' is said to purge the body of impurities and the soul of all sins. Bathing in the waters are done by devotees to absolve all sins and hence the name.
Another tourist attraction set on the cliffs overlooking the beach is the two thousand-year-old shrine the Janardhanaswamy Temple. While you are here, visit the Sivagiri Mutt founded by the great religious reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru. The Samadhi (the final resting place) brings crowds of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days (30th December to 1st January).

Along the shore, there are rows of beach shacks, where you can shop till your drop exploring things ranging everything from jewelry to handicrafts. Alternatively, get surfing lessons or opt for a canoe trip along the backwaters or visit the desolate Kappil beach along the oceanfront promenade.
